Each pen is completely hand made using conventional machining techniques. Once the pen has been finished then it is moved to the mill to carve the detail and engraving into the pen. The actual time the pen spends in the mill can range from 2 to 30 or more hours depending on the complexity of the design. Design development and programming can take an additional 10 to 30 hours again depending on complexity. Due to the time required to produce a single piece, Dan does not produce a large volume of pens per year.

Due to the hand crafted nature of the pens, no two pens are ever truly identical. Additional many of the pens crafted by Dan are intended to be true 1/1 limited editions. Making pens from unique and/or vintage materials is one of Dan’s specialties. A distinctive feature to all Dan Symonds' pens are the threads. The unique nature of the thread form allows for a single turn coupling that will lock tight and not come loose.
